Black preschool educators fired because of race: suit

Black preschool educators fired because of race: suit

The five plaintiffs, all women who worked as teachers or teaching assistants at the Children's Learning Center in Morningside Heights, lost their jobs between 2010 and this year after the school brought in a new head administrator, the lawsuit says. The suit also alleges that the school created a 'hostile environment' and replaced the fired educators with white instructors.

Black Leaders Call For Blackface Assemblyman To Resign From Leadership Post

Black Leaders Call For Blackface Assemblyman To Resign From Leadership Post

dov hinkind racist blackface

Dov Hikind‘s apology for donning blackface at a party in his Brooklyn home is falling on deaf ears, as Black leaders intensify their criticism of the assemblyman, the Gothamist reports.

Led by Assemblywoman Inez Barron, a group of African American leaders and other public officials gathered in from of City Hall in New York City Tuesday to lambaste Hikind. Barron began her attack on Hikind by criticizing his vocal support of racial profiling.

“Dov Hikind’s latest antic is another reveal of who Dov Hikind really is,” Barron said. “His assertion that he did not know that appearing in blackface is offensive to black people is incredulous… Mr. Hikind, your egregious behavior is shameful, degrading, unacceptable and unworthy of a leadership position.

Barron’s husband, City Councilman Charles Barron, went as far as saying that Gov. Andrew Cuomo and Speaker Sheldon Silver should remove Hikind from his position as Assistant Majority Leader. “His inability to repent, to generally repent and ‘get it,’ is another problem,” Barron said. “The governor needs to say something, and we need to go beyond condemnation verbally.”

Even Mayor Michael Bloomberg sided with Barron when the City Councilman asked him to comment on Hikind. “This time, we agree,” he responded.

Conrad Tillard, a minister at the Nazarene Congregational Church of Christ in Bedford-Stuyvesant, said that Hikind’s actions were inexcusable.

“The NAACP…fought against ‘blackface’ in the ’20s and ’30s,” he said. “For an elected public official to feel comfortable not only dressing in blackface but defending his actions is an outrage that says to me that the dignity of African-American people is under attack. As a clergyperson, I am here to say that we will defend our dignity. We will not allow public officials, corporations or anyone else to demean or deprive us of the dignity that we deserve.”

At first, Hikind was very dismissive of the outcry directed at him over his decision to wear blackface, a form of theatrical makeup that has a well-documented history of mocking African Americans during minstrel shows for more than 100 years. On Monday, he took to his blog to post his initial response to the outcry:

Hikind said he wore the makeup during a party in which he and other attendees celebrated the Jewish holiday Purim.

In an interview with the New York Times, Hikind said he was shocked that people would be so offended by the costume.

“My wife, you saw the picture, she was the devil,” Mr. Hikind said. “Believe me, she’s not the devil.”

“A lot of people just don’t realize, on Purim, in a sense, forgive me for saying this, you do crazy stuff,” he added. “It’s not done, God forbid, to laugh, to mock, to hurt, to pain anyone.”

Though, when you read the definition of Purim, it says nothing about offending people and doing “crazy stuff.” According to Judaism 101, “Purim is one of the most joyous and fun holidays on the Jewish calendar. It commemorates a time when the Jewish people living in Persia were saved from extermination.”

Moreover, the spirit of the holiday, as it is explained above, falls oddly out of step with comments he made to the AP regarding racial profiling–especially when looking for terrorist suspects. Watch the video below:

Despite his missteps, Hikind told The Times that he learned his lesson. But he still ended up putting his foot in his mouth when he elaborated.

“Next year I was thinking I’d be an Indian,” he said. “But you know, I’ve changed my mind about that. I don’t think that’s a good idea. Somebody will be offended.”

Seriously? Michelle Obama Depicted As Slave On Spanish Magazine Cover

michlle obama spainThe August 2012 issue of Magazine Fuera de Serie, a supplement to Spanish newspaper Expansion, features a cover image guaranteed to turn heads.

First Lady Michelle Obama’s face (pictured) is superimposed over an 1800 female slave painting by French artist Marie-Guilhelmine Benoist. Seated on a chair covered with the American Flag, right breast exposed, and wearing an Aunt Jemina headscarf, the image is part of a feature article examining Mrs. Obama’s popularity among the American public.

“…Behind every great man there is a great woman [which best] describes the Obama marriage. In the shadow of the U.S. President is a person whose popularity ratings exceed those of Barack’s own. This person is none other than his wife Michelle,” reads the roughly translated description for “Michelle Tataranieta De Esclava, Dueña De América” (Michelle, Granddaughter Of A Slave. Lady Of America).

Watch New Yorkers give their opinions on New Yorker Magazine’s “Radical Muslim” Michelle Obama cartoon:

According to Clutch Magazine, the cover is part of a series depicting famous people nude and also features Princess Diana, Abraham Lincoln, and even Michelle’s husband, Barack Obama. Defending her controversial image, French/English artist Karine Percheron-Daniels claims it gives the viewer a glimpse in to an “alternative unexpected reality” letting us “view famous individuals in a different way.”

An interesting defense. But with Europe’s history of racially questionable images and descriptions of Black women (Dutch Magazine Jackie referred to Rihanna as “De Niggabitch,” for instance), many across the African Diaspora are sure to have strong opinions on Magazine Fuera de Serie’s cover choice.

Sound Off!

Psychologist Fired For “Why Black Women Are Unattractive Study”

Satoshi Kanazawa, the psychologist who caused a great deal of controversy with his article, on why African American women are unattractive has been fired from psychology today, where the article first surfaced. Huliq reports:

And now Satoshi Kanazawa’s lost his blog and his profile page has been deleted from Psychology Today’s website. His article and unqualified research on unattractive black women sent off a fury of protests online. 75,000 people blew up Psychology Today via email, Twitter and Facebook. Some even rang Psychology Today’s telephones off the hook.

When all was said and done, Psychology Today sent an email to ColorofChange.org and informed the largest online African American political organization that Kanazawa’s work won’t appear on their site any longer. Psychology Today even said they’ve instituted new rules to prevent inflammatory content in the future.

People who hadn’t heard of Kanazawa were sharing the text in question, their hurt, their ire and disbelief that Psychology Today endorsed the piece. They demanded Kanazawa be fired. Students at Kanazawa’s other day job, London School of Economics, have also called for Kanazawa’s resignation.

Donald Trump: Inspiration To Rappers (And Country Stars) Everywhere!

Among the many hilarious, absurd things Donald Trump has said this week, one quote has stood out like a strippers convention at Chuck E. Cheese's: during an interview with Post editor Fred Dicker, he declared proudly, "I have always had a great relationship with the blacks." The Observer had the good sense to ask political guru/gay enthusiast Roger Stone what he could make of the quote; he replied, "Trivia question—how many hit rap songs mention Trump?" It sounded like a challenge to us, so we did some searching, and found at least 36 songs, most of them rap (and one country), which namedrop The Donald.
