Deadly Harlem Intersection Continues To Lack Crossing Guard

Deadly Harlem Intersection Continues To Lack Crossing Guard

Deadly Harlem Intersection Continues To Lack Crossing Guard The Harlem intersection where a 6-year-old boy was killed walking to school last February is routinely without an NYPD crossing guard. According to the Post, the crosswalks at First Avenue and East 117th Street, an area that is frequented by the kind of tractor trailers that fatally struck Amar Diarrassouba, had no crossing guard to escort children on Thursday. "If we have the manpower to put somebody there, we will. If not, it goes uncovered for the day," a supervisor at the 25th Precinct told a Post source. "Of course, it's dangerous. But I'm down guards in other areas." [ more › ]

Black preschool educators fired because of race: suit

Black preschool educators fired because of race: suit

The five plaintiffs, all women who worked as teachers or teaching assistants at the Children's Learning Center in Morningside Heights, lost their jobs between 2010 and this year after the school brought in a new head administrator, the lawsuit says. The suit also alleges that the school created a 'hostile environment' and replaced the fired educators with white instructors.

Suprise School Safety Drill Terrifies Students and Staff in Harlem

Suprise School Safety Drill Terrifies Students and Staff in Harlem

A Harlem school's attempt to make teachers and students feel safer in the wake of the Newtown massacre backfired terribly on Tuesday morning. Officials at the Horan School, which serves 300 special needs students, decided to practice the school's emergency procedure without warning teachers beforehand. After a woman said over the loudspeaker, "Shooter," or, "intruder," and, "get out, get out, lockdown," panicked teachers called 911 as students looked for hiding spots. “We really thought we were not going home that night,” said one teacher. “It was probably the worst feeling I ever had in my life.” The New York City Education Department, says it's "looking into how this drill was conducted.”
