A 73-year-old doctor who worked part-time as a physician at Rikers Island was arrested in his Harlem office this morning for his participation in an oxycodone drug ring that spanned five years and released millions of pills into the city. Authorities say Dr. Robert Gibbs wrote prescriptions for people who he had never met; the names and personal information of those "patients" were given to him by his 44-year-old accomplice Ronald Vaughn, who employed middlemen to fill the prescriptions in pharmacies across town. In their raid of Dr. Gibbs's office NYPD officers and DEA agents found $45,000 in cash, along with medical and financial records to be used as evidence. [ more › ]

HARLEM — Because doctors tend to practice where they are trained, a new federally funded initiative from the Institute for Family Health aims to keep primary care doctors in Harlem by training eight of them here, starting next year.
The institute's Family Health Center at North General — one of 26 such primary care centers in the state — will begin training doctors in the Harlem Residency in Family Medicine in June 2012. The residency, funded through a "Teaching Health Center" grant, will become one of only a handful of health center-led residencies in the country.
The Family Health Center opened inside the existing facilities at the 200-bed North General Hospital last year, after the hospital announced that it was closing and declared bankruptcy in June of 2010.
"The institute has a strong track record of training family medicine residents who continue to practice in high-need communities. The addition of a Harlem-based residency program will allow us to attract more committed family physicians, many of whom will choose to stay here once their training is complete," said Dr. Neil Calman, president and CEO of the Institute for Family Health.

INWOOD — City health inspectors temporarily closed down popular Chinese food restaurant One Family last week after finding evidence of roaches, mice, inadequate "personal cleanliness" and improperly refrigerated food, according to the Department of Health's website.
The restaurant, located at 52A Sherman Ave., between Thayer Street and Dongan Place, had its metal gates firlmly closed over the weekend after health inspectors slapped it with 50 health violation points.
Violations also included evidence of improper pesticide use and storage, and problematic plumbing and/or a broken sewage disposal system. The restaurant was forced to close on Thursday.
The owners were unavailable for comment, and an outgoing voicemail message at the restaurant did not address the health-related closure.
“Because of the renovation the store will be closed today,” the message said. “We will be open again next week. Sorry for any inconvenience.”
A marathon runner suffered an apparent heart attack toward the tail end of today's 42nd NYC Marathon. FDNY said that the call about the man, said to be in his 30s, came in around 12:30 p.m. at the 22-mile mark on the marathon route at 5th Avenue and 117th Street— only four miles short of the finish line. “He fell on his face on Fifth Avenue, he just dropped like he was was shot,” Harlem resident James White told the Post.
