MANHATTAN SUPREME COURT — She's going from the big house to the school house.
Afrika Owes, the teen charged with carrying guns for a Harlem street gang, was released Thursday after serving a summer in jail as part of a plea deal.
Owes, 17, a former Deerfield Academy student who will now be attending a public Manhattan high school, was released as part of an agreement that would see her freed before the start of the academic year.
Owes' attorney, Elsie Chandler, said her client is looking to put the past and her summer at Rikers Island behind her and get back to pursuing an education.
"She's someone for whom education and school is a lifeline and I think she's learned from this experience," Chandler said Thursday.
It's no surprise that Harlem Pastor James David Manning has been preaching against President Obama—he's targeted Obama on and off ever since he came into office, most prominently by putting up "Obama Is Evil" and "He Used Black Vote to Uncle Tom For Wall St." on the tall sign outside the ATLAH World Missionary Church on the corner of Lenox Avenue and W. 123rd Street. But that doesn't mean his neighbors aren't completely fed up with him: "It's not something that represents this community. It sends out a message that all of Harlem is not supporting [Obama] and that's not true," said Belynda M'baye, who walks by the sign everyday. [ more › ]

NEW YORK — Funeral arrangements have been made for the actress and comedian who gained fame playing a grandmother on “The Cosby Show” and “Sesame Street.”
A public viewing will be held for Clarice Taylor on Tuesday from noon to 4 p.m. at Canaan Baptist Church on 116th Street in New York.
A private wake will be held from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., followed by the funeral.
Taylor, whose show business career spanned five decades, died of congestive heart failure at 93 in her home in Englewood last Monday.
She received an Emmy nomination in 1986 for her role as Anna Huxtable, mother of Bill Cosby’s character and grandparent of the Huxtable youngsters. Taylor also had a recurring role on “Sesame Street.”

Yesterday, the 17-year-old accused of ferrying drugs for her boyfriend's Harlem gang was released from Rikers after the Abyssinian Baptist Church used their funds to post her $25,000 bail and give her a second chance.
