Part I: Featuring An Evening Of Films & Discussion On The Life Of Malcolm X

Malcolm's Echo: Narrated By Professor James Small this film footage travels through Harlem and follows in Malcolm's historical footsteps. Numerous Harlem residents and personalities give their views on how Malcolm has influenced both their lives and community.

"Make it Plain" The Autobiography Of Malcolm X: Adapted for the screen from the autobiography he wrote with Alex Haley's assistance, Malcolm X (released two decades before the Spike Lee film Malcolm X) is a stirring portrait of the man whose life has become a rallying cry for millions. Includes rare footage of his speeches and interviews as well as newsreel footage. Narrated by James Earl Jones with Martin Luther King, Betty Shabazz, Ossie Davis, Muhammad Ali, Jesse Jackson, Rap Brown, Angela Davis and many more.

Malcolmology: This three part documentary short film serves as an introduction to the late Manning Marble's new book about Malcolm X, Malcolm X: A Life of Reinvention. It goes through some of the primary contributions of the book, as explained by Marable himself, in terms of tearing down some of the myths about Malcolm X that have been popularized by the autobiography written by Alex Haley and movie directed by Spike Lee.

Malcolm X: Bigger than the Screen


Sunday, May 22nd - 2pm

 

On Sunday, May 22nd at 2pm, the Museum of the Moving Image will host a talk with Nelson George, author, TV producer, cultural historian, and filmmaker, entitled, Malcolm X: Bigger than the Screen.

Nelson George will screen selected clips from films about Malcolm X and discuss the challenges filmmakers faced in documenting and depicting Malcolm X on film and television.

Legendary filmmaker Melvin Van Peebles will also be on the program sharing his reflections and recollections of an interview he did of Malcolm X in Paris not long before his assassination.
